GALLERIES

Although Newtown is known to be home of joburg's biggest Events. It is important to need to realize that there is more to Newtown than Events and The night life,it has so much more to offer!

With every experience you learn something new, most people including myself don't know that newtown actually has four galleries and each gallery was built for various objectives.How's about we visit these galleries and view the different art,design and photography;

AFRONOVA CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY
Afronova presents exhibitions of modern and contemporary art from the African continent and represent artists. The gallery has a specialized bookshop with a catalogue of local and international publications on the art of the continent.Afronova is a Pan African gallery for modern and contemporary art created by Henri Vergon. The elegant gallery space is located in the heart of Johannesburg, Newtown, and contributes to the cosmopolitan landscape of the city.

The following apintings were done by a malawian woman by the name of Billie Zangewa, she has incorporated how africans in different counries live.

THE second gallery is ROOKE GALLERY

Working only with a select few artists, the Rooke Gallery aims to further the appreciation of contemporary art. Based in Newtown South Africa, the gallery hosts a strictly limited number of exhibitions per year, all of which are designed to appeal to a growing art public with an appreciation for the avant-garde.

Krynauw's source material populates his studio like debris after a natural catastrophe; paint is everywhere.

This residue is exploited by Krynauw, taking the violence of his mediated material and translating that into a source of original meaning; a portrait.

THE third gallery based in Newtown is ARTIST PROOF STUDIO

Artist Proof Studio is a quality Art Education Centre that specializes in printmaking through a variety of diverse partnerships with creative young artists, established professional artists, community groups, patrons and funders.

As a school of photography, a gallery, and a project space, the Market Photo Workshop has played a pivotal role in the training of South Africa’s photographers, ensuring that visual literacy reaches neglected and marginalized parts of our society. Since it was founded in 1989, by world-renowned photographer David Goldblatt, the Photo Workshop has been an agent of change and representation, informing photographers, visual artists, educators, students, and broader communities of trends, issues, and debates in photography and visual culture

After a 3 year absence, stand-up comedian Stuart Taylor returns to the Market Theatre with his latest solo offering, Money’s Too Tight To Mention. If lately you’ve had to give up luxuries like naked sushi and replace it with a can of pilchards on your wife’s tummy, this show is certainly for you!” adds Taylor. It has been described in the national press as a breathtaking amalgamation of ghost story, love drama, historical epic and dark comedy.
When thirty-year-old loner Vincent Liversage meets sixteen-year-old Katrien Joubert (the rebellious daughter of the local NG Kerk dominie) an unusual friendship is forged and soon the two hatch a plan to escape the oppressive town of their birth.  However, to obtain freedom they must first confront and challenge their divided family histories.

THE MARKET THEATRELet's walk to the first performance venue that is; THE MARKET THEATRE
Co-founder and Artistic Director of the Market Theatre thought a visit to Joburg is incomplete without a night out at this internationally acclaimed theatre, made famous as one of the first integrated theatres, and which played a pivotal role in the struggle against apartheid through the encouragement of debate and challenging ideas. It houses three theatres, a bar and gallery. The complex still retains the ambience and spirit of a market place. It is infused with theatrical history, from posters of Athol Fugard plays that premiered there to Grammy and Tony-award winning musicals like sarafina. www.markettheatre.co.za

That's not all when it comes to performances, DANCE FACTORY;
This is a unique concept in fostering a dance culture and developing dance audiences in Joburg. Funded mainly by well-wishers, the Dance Factory has had success in establishment, equipping and administering of  a dance centre through classes, workshops and performances, and in particular to communities which have been culturally, educationally and economically disadvantaged. The dance factory frequently hosts performances by acclaimed local and international dancers

 Newtown forms the heart of the city’s regeneration and reinvention of itself. Newtown is a fairly large area that lies sandwiched between the railway lines to the north, the M2 highway in the south and bounded in the east and west by West Street and Quinn Street respectively.

What makes Newtown so accessible is the
Nelson Mandela Bridge, which links Braamfontein to Newtown, is able to carry some 3000 cars an hour and forms the new gateway into the city from the north. Newtown is now a mixed-use area with a vibrant and unique character, particularly if you take its cultural facilities into account. Newtown is home to the renowned Market Theatre, which played such an important role in South African theatre during the apartheid era, committed as it was to non-racial theatre right from 1974, where a run-down Edwardian market hall was converted into a cultural arena that provided a platform for some of the country’s best actors and playwrights.

Newtown Cultural Precinct, Johannesburg
Today the complex is home to three theatres and two art galleries, and on Saturday mornings a flea market continues at the theatre. Kippies, located in the former Songwriters’ Club in Newtown, is named after the legendary saxophonist Kippie Moeketsi and serves as a venue to live jazz as it has for years, despite its closure for two years.
